City Of Plano Garage Sale Ordinance

Please note the following important information concerning Garage/Occasional/Neighborhood Sales in the City of Plano.

Signs

If you choose to use signs, they must be placed on your private property or your neighbor's private property with their permission, or it will be in violation of the sign ordinance and may be subject to a fine not to exceed Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00).  Fines are at the discretion of the prosecutor or judge.

As a guideline:
Your private property is not the strip of grass between the curb and sidewalk.  This is city right-of-way.

As a guideline:
In the front yard of a home, right-of-ways normally extend 10 feet from the back of street curb. 
In the back yard, right-of-ways normally extend 3 feet behind pavement on alleys.

As a guideline:
No signs allowed on medians of public streets.
No signs allowed on corners of public streets.
No signs allowed on the grass next to the curb of a public street.
No signs allowed next to or adjacent to a screening wall of a public street.
No signs allowed in subdivision entrances.

As a rule:
No signs allowed in the right-of-way of a public street.

Garage Sale Ordinance

  1. The permit to conduct the sale must be displayed on the premises for the entire duration of the sale.
  2. Permits will only be issued to residents of Plano.
  3. Garage/Occasional Sales:
    1. No more than three (3) sales shall be conducted at the same address in any calendar year.
    2. Duration of the sale shall not exceed seventy-two (72) consecutive hours.
    3. At least five (5) business days shall elapse between consecutive sales.
    4. Reference sign requirements above and sign ordinance for compliance.
    5. Signs shall not exceed a maximum of eight (8) square feet.
    6. All signs advertising the sale must be removed within twelve (12) hours of sale.
  4. City Ordinance prohibits parking in alleyways.
  5. Cancellation prior to the sale is required so it will not count toward the three (3) garage sale limitations per year.
  6. Any person, firm, or corporation violating the provisions in the City Code of Ordinance 1-4b, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, be subject to a fine not exceeding Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) for each offense, and each and every day or portion thereof that such violation shall continue shall constitute a separate offense.
